On Dicks Vioolbouwatelier young musicians can find a variety of string instruments Dick has at his disposal. The catalogue is dynamic and easy to browse through, while the design is contemporary, yet classy, appealing to a more modern demographic. With this collection, Dick can promote his instruments to colleagues so that they may contact him for repairs or make an appointment to try one out themselves.
The classical music industry has a very traditional crowd, which is often reflected in their digital products. However, that’s not all there is to the industry. As a professional musician himself, Dick knew that there are younger musicians out there who have different tastes and needs than their colleagues. He asked me to design and create a contemporary website with them in mind, where string musicians can purchase or rent a new instrument from his collection. This includes violins he created himself, which he wanted me to highlight on the website. I was also asked to create the branding, including a logo, and to photograph and edit every product.
While the website itself isn’t a webshop, the catalogue is still set up with products in mind. In order to make it easy for him to add new instruments (violins, bows or other string instruments), I had to make the catalogue dynamic and easy to edit.
In order to attract young musicians, I wanted to create a design that is fresh, yet still has that classical feel. Combining dark blue and gold, the website perfectly accentuates the instruments displayed in a way that’s unique compared with competitors.

The end result is a simple, yet effective website that shows off the string instruments and bows that Dick has to offer. It promotes the instruments through a fresh and contemporary design, and gives more information about Dick himself in a playful way, so that young musicians know that they can truly trust his knowledge and expertise.
